La Liga president Javier Tebas stated on social media that Gianni Infantino should not remain in office.
Tebas believes that FIFA's withdrawal of its proposal to privatize the league is good news, but it would be a serious mistake to assume that the governance issues have been resolved. Continental federations, associations, leagues, and players should not consider the matter closed simply because of this withdrawal. The problems are far more complex.
"Have we forgotten the red card being revoked after political interference? Forgot that the US Congress has called on Infantino to appear in an investigation for extremely serious conduct? Forgot that charges in FIFA's historic corruption case were dropped? Forgot the outrageous prices of World Cup tickets? Forgot the unilateral decisions regarding the international match schedule, new tournaments, and formats—decisions made without any real dialogue or agreement with the relevant parties?"
The problem has never been a single proposal. The problem lies in a governance model that centralizes power, weakens checks and balances, and marginalizes those directly affected by its decisions. Therefore, I believe Gianni Infantino should not continue as FIFA president. World football needs new leadership to modernize governance, restore the institution's credibility, and consult with stakeholders before making future decisions, assessing their impact on sport, the economy, and society, rather than unilaterally imposing them. Withdrawing a proposal does not erase what has happened. This is just the tip of the iceberg.
