According to Diario Sport, the left-wing coalition in the Spanish Congress of Deputies has registered a proposal demanding that Spain not co-host the 2030 World Cup with Morocco.
This proposal was submitted by the House Left Alliance caucus at the urging of the IU. The proposal states that the recent crisis in Ceuta has revealed an "exceptionally large" humanitarian tragedy occurring in the border region. The proposal points out that while an independent investigation is needed to determine the cause and responsibility of the incident, the scale of the event, the failure of preventative measures, and the existing record of the events are sufficient to force a re-examination of the trust relationship upon which the co-hosting of the World Cup is based.
The proposal also calls on the Spanish Football Federation to request FIFA to review its statutes and conduct an "independent, open, and up-to-date assessment" of the human rights risks in the host country. They also require an assessment of the impact of the migration crisis on the tournament's "relevant human rights commitments" and, if any host country is found to have seriously violated international commitments and human rights obligations, to submit further action recommendations to the Chamber of Deputies.
